I was born in 1971, England. I received a degree in Computer Science from Warwick University in 1992 and since then have worked for the Medical Research Council's Laboratory of Molecular Biology as a software engineer.

I first learnt about puzzle no 1 in the 1980s by reading Gordon Lee's puzzlepages in "Dragon User"; a magazine for an 8-bit micro of that time. At that time I did not attempt the puzzle as I felt I'd really need a disk drive to cache information for speed, which I didn't have. Much later (1999!) I decided to return to the puzzle to test out different algorithms, in particular applying ideas from evolution and natural selection.
